The Importance Of Dog Training

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 526

Obedience dog training is very important. With a trained dog, you can impose fewer restrictions and you can practically give him more freedom because of his reliability. When you have guests or friends visiting at home, you don’t need to lock your dog inside his cage for you have no fear of having him become a nuisance or a pest as you can expect him to be at his best behavior.

It is important that your dog can understand even just a few essential basic commands. The pet owner should know how to control his dog as there have been many cases of uncontrolled aggressive behavior.

Training helps strengthen your bond and relationship with your dog as you get to spend quality time together most especially if you will be doing the dog training yourself. Through training, you are able to build good communication lines and your dog understands what you want or expect from him. Mutual respect is also established as you demonstrate to your dog as being the Alpha Dog or leader of the pack (dogs are pack animals).

Obedience dog training gives the dog owner the say and the control over their pets, and it can potentially save their lives when it comes to emergency or life threatening situations. It helps prevent unfortunate incidents from occurring, in case of accidents or untoward incidents, as dogs become more responsive. For instance, when your dog accidentally gets loose from his leash and crosses the road - even with cars passing by - you can immediately give out the command, preventing an unfortunate event from happening.

Well-mannered dogs are not likely to end up at animal shelters and it is not at all hard to find homes for trained pooches. Dogs with no training and who will misbehave will cause everybody problems. The dog owner, being irritated with the behavior, might reach the point of giving up on the dog. More dogs causing nuisance or displaying aggressive behaviors can create stricter restrictions and laws, which will then affect other dogs as well.

When it comes to training your dog, you can do the training yourself (you can find many guide books on this) or you can hire a professional dog trainer. If you haven’t got the money to spare right now for a dog trainer, you can train your dog yourself with some of the basic common commands which is a must for every dog like “sit, stay, down” and understanding the command “no”.

Timing is very important when it comes to dog training. Knowing when to punish a misbehavior will not render him confused. Positive praise should also be given every time your dog does something right. Be consistent with your rules and your commands.

Everybody will love a well-behaved dog, and he will be happy and feel appreciated with the attention and affection that he will receive from the people all around him. With a well-trained pooch, life will be much more comfortable for you as well as for him.
